Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are commonly used for primary (“baby”) teeth to provide strength and are silver in color. For most front teeth, white crowns can be an alternative option. The purpose of placing stainless steel crowns on primary teeth is to protect, seal, and strengthen the tooth in the following cases:
Stainless steel crowns serve as temporary restorations, safeguarding the primary tooth until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt and take its place. Preserving the primary tooth whenever possible is crucial. The placement of a stainless steel crown on a primary tooth can be completed in a single appointment. The decayed portion is removed, the tooth is prepared to accommodate the crown, and then the crown is cemented in place. Proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing, should be maintained for a crowned tooth, just like with other teeth.
